The latest album from MOBO Award-winning rapper Akala, Doublethink, is inspired by Orwell’s 1984, Huxley’s Brave New World and Zamyatin’s We. Orwell Prize Administrator, Gavin Freeguard, spoke to Akala about his album, Orwell, language, the politics of hip-hop and the importance of education (and ‘edutainment’). They also talked about Shakespeare (Akala founded The Hip Hop Shakespeare Company), and the difference between adapting the Bard and Orwell to music.
