The Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain’s Social Evils 2020 is open to any story concerned with a matter of public policy in the UK, published in 2019.
The Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain’s Social Evils, worth £3,000 to the winner, has fast become one of the most sought-after Awards in the UK. The winning entry should be a story that has enhanced the public understanding of public policy and/or social issues in the UK.
The Prize encourages entries across all forms of media, including broadcast, podcast and photojournalism. In 2019 the winner was Max Daly (Global Drugs Editor, VICE). Previous winners include the Financial Times, Nicci Gerrard and Alison Holt, while shortlists have included entries from across the United Kingdom.
The Prize is free to enter, independent of any editorial agenda, and accepts self-nominations. There is no limit to the number of journalists who may enter from any publication or the number of Prizes a journalist may enter in a single year.
Winning the Orwell Prize is fine recognition for the work I’ve been doing at VICE investigating drug crime in Britain. It’s also justification for VICE to do more of the same intensive journalism. No other journalistic award has the same integrity.
