Some housekeeping

  • As of 2023, The Orwell Prize for Journalism and The Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain’s Social Evils will be judged by the same panel. Entrants should make a separate entry for each Prize they wish to be considered for.
  • All material submitted must be first published between 1st April 2022 and 31st March 2023.
  • Written items should be submitted as a PDF or Word document and a permanent, accessible, non-expiring URL where available.
  • Video or audio items should be submitted as permanent, accessible, non-expiring URLs. Where this is not possible, please contact the us to arrange another method.

2023 The Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain's Social Evils

  • About Your Project

    Please name your entry: this may be the name of the original investigation, or, in the case where the entry is a collation of a range of material, a new title.
  • A singe author, or a very small team of authors, must be clearly identifiable. Entries consisting of single pieces of work by different authors will not be accepted, but entries where co-authors have worked on all of the submitted pieces will be.
  • If you are submitting as a freelance author reporting for one or more platforms, please name each here.
  • Please enter a primary email address for correspondence about your entry. This will ideally be a member of the team responsible for the project.
  • Photo

    For a single journalist upload a byline portrait photograph with no rights reserved. For a small team upload the logo of the broadcaster or newspaper. At least 800 pixels across. The maximum file size is 10MB.
  • Accepted file types: jpg, png, jpeg, Max. file size: 10 MB.
  • Supporting statement

    The supporting statement is an opportunity for you to offer a brief summary of your investigation. If you believe there is additional material which would provide important context to your entry, you are encouraged to draw attention to this in your statement. It is up the judges’ discretion as to whether or not they wish to pursue these recommendations. Please read the rules and eligibility requirements for further information about the purpose of the supporting statement.
  • Your entry

    A submission should consist of a story that has enhanced the public understanding of social problems and public policy in the UK. You may submit up to six items to illustrate your investigation, in any combination of media. The Prize welcomes and encourages reporting which extends the range of traditional media. All material must be first published between 1st April 2022 and 31st March 2023.
